Scout Batz
How did you get into legal tech?
I met Joseph at a mutual friend’s wedding, and Joseph asked me to do a video for an organization with my skills in illustration. Soon after this project, Joseph asked me to work at A2J Tech as a designer, doing graphic and web design.
Why is access to justice important to you?
I want my work to be meaningful. Many people are visual, so if we can use illustrations, icons, and clean and logical design to help people get the information they need, then my design skills will be helpful.
If you weren’t working for A2J Tech, what would you be doing?
Painting flowers and architecture and selling prints of my work.
A2J Tech has employees all over! Where are you based out of?
I live in Houston, Texas.
A2J Tech does a weekly employee trivia! What topic would you be best at?
I’m not good at trivia because keeping random facts like that in my brain is unnecessary at this point in my life. I need brain power for other things. Maybe the only thing I might be good at would be architectural history facts, but that’s not a guarantee.
What’s your favorite holiday recipe?
Wassail - yum! I like to add chunks of pineapple and whole cranberries to the drink as it’s simmering.
Do you have any pets?
I have two cats who are brothers. Their names are Vanilla and Ginger.
What is your favorite book or movie?
My favorite movie is: “About Time.” I think it encapsulates so many aspects of life that one might experience in a humorous and sentimental way. The more of life that I experience, the more I love this movie and relate to it.
What do you listen to while working remotely?
Twenty One Pilots on repeat.
What’s one place you’d really like to visit?
New Zealand’s landscapes.
What’s a surprising fact about you?
I worked for a year at a Stained Glass Studio, where I learned how to create new stained glass from start to finish and also how to take apart old stained glass to be cleaned and restored.
What’s your Meyers-Briggs alignment?

How did you get into legal tech?
I entered the field of legal tech by transitioning from criminal justice and legal systems research. As a community-based researcher, I noticed how confusing and difficult it was to find resources online. I started to learn about UX design, and subsequently began to apply for jobs in the field.
Why is access to justice important to you?
Access to justice is important to me because everyone deserves to have equal access to the legal system. Moreover, the legal system has also historically been utilized as a tool to marginalize different groups of people, and working on access to justice initiatives helps address and rectify these legacies.
If you weren’t working for A2J Tech, what would you be doing?
I would be at law school!
A2J Tech has employees all over! Where are you based out of?
Toronto, Canada.
A2J Tech does a weekly employee trivia! What topic would you be best at?

What’s your favorite holiday recipe?
I’m still on the lookout for one that I consistently make. This year I plan to make a vegan sunday roast.

These keep changing, but my favorite book at the moment is A Fine Balance by Rohitnon Mistry and my favorite movie right now is La Haine.
What do you listen to while working remotely?
Can’t listen to music and work, unfortunately! I do listen to a lot of brown noise though.
What’s one place you’d really like to visit?
Vietnam.
What’s a surprising fact about you?
I spend an obscene amount of time on my Fantasy Football team each week…(or what Americans call “soccer”).
