How did you get into legal tech?

I managed a small IT company in northern Minnesota from 2018-2021. A number of the clients we served were in the legal services industry, including a few small law firms, a legally focused non-profit, and several legal aid organizations. In late 2020, I worked alongside one of our legal aid clients to develop a legal kiosk program, which was eventually expanded to include sites across the entire state. A2J Tech was brought on board to provide overall management for the project.

Why is access to justice important to you?

When I was little, my grandfather taught me that “when you’re doing good, you build a longer table and not a higher fence.” This is something that’s stuck with me my entire life. I believe that if we want to live in a truly just society, we have to make sure everyone has a seat at that table, and we all have to work together to make this possible.

If you weren’t working for A2J Tech, what would you be doing?

Working in a similar space. After working as a freelance technology consultant for several years, it became my goal to use my skills and talents somewhere where I could make a positive difference in the world. Having worked with A2J Tech prior, I was extremely excited to have the opportunity to apply for a position with this amazing team!

A2J Tech has employees all over! Where are you based out of?

I currently live in Columbus, Ohio

A2J Tech does a weekly employee trivia! What topic would you be best at?

Something nerdy like Star Trek or Lord of the Rings. I’m also a huge history buff.

What’s your favorite holiday recipe?

Yorkshire pudding - my mom used to make one for Christmas every year. I’ve tried to do it several times myself, but it’s tricky and I’ve never gotten it right!

Do you have any pets?

I don’t have a full-time pet, but my daughter often brings her dog with her from her mom’s house, and I usually watch him when they’re out of town. He’s a French Bulldog named Bogey, and he’s a spoiled brat!

Bogey

What is your favorite book or movie?

Favorite Book: Tigana, by Guy Gavriel Kay

Favorite Movie: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

What do you listen to while working remotely?

Lots of stuff! If I’m in a chill mood it’s usually jazz of some sort, bluegrass, or country. When I need to get my energy up it’s punk or alternative rock.

What’s one place you’d really like to visit?

I’ve always wanted to go to Uruguay and Malta.

What’s a surprising fact about you?

I have lived most of my life with a heart pacemaker - I had one implanted when I was 3 years old and have had one ever since. It’s extremely rare for someone to live with one for so long as they’re typically given to older patients.

How did you get into legal tech?

As a former political and community organizer turned designer, I am motivated to work at the intersection of design and social good. Legal tech is a field that piqued my interest because I both wanted to learn more about it and saw it as an opportunity to make a big impact. Access to justice is critical for achieving equality and equity across communities, and legal tech is an important piece of that puzzle. Working in legal tech feels like it has almost limitless potential.

Why is access to justice important to you?

There are so many systemic inequalities to tackle, and at the heart of it is an unequal access to justice. Improving access to justice has ripple effects in every other aspect of life, and is impactful no matter how big or small the scale. I want to make the world better than I found it, and working on access to justice is key to that change.

If you weren’t working for A2J Tech, what would you be doing?

One reason I like working at A2J is that I wanted to work where I could design for social good, so if I wasn’t at A2J I would be looking for a way to still work at the intersection of social justice and design. Outside of that, I love to travel, learn new languages and try new cuisines, so I’d maybe be pursuing that somehow!

A2J Tech has employees all over! Where are you based out of?

Portsmouth, NH

A2J Tech does a weekly employee trivia! What topic would you be best at?

I feel like I have so much random obscure knowledge about popular TV shows like Friends and The Office, so maybe something like that?

What’s your favorite holiday recipe?

We tend to bring a new dish to Thanksgiving each year. This year we made stuffed squash and last year we made four different mini pies. It’s always a bigger production than we anticipate but it’s fun.

Do you have any pets?

Alas, I do not - my partner and I have traveled a lot and have more travel plans in our future so it does not work right now, but one day!

What is your favorite book or movie?

I will have Harry Potter on all the time, any time. Reading - I reread The Little House in the Big Woods series a lot - it’s so comforting. I also love reading a lot of classic authors like Ernest Hemingway and Virginia Woolf.

What do you listen to while working remotely?

It depends on my mood and what I need to get done, but maybe some Fleetwood Mac, or maybe some light jazz, or sometimes just some ambiance music!

What’s a surprising fact about you?

I’d love to go to Bali!

What’s one place you’d really like to visit?

I have been to 28 US National Parks - goal is to get to them all (there are 63!)

What’s your Meyers-Briggs alignment?
